Beermen to miss half of coaching staff in PBA restart

Already missing the services of key players, San Miguel is set to miss more personnel during the resumption of the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup.

Due to limitations inside the PBA bubble in Clark, Pampanga, half of the team’s assistant coaches were left behind, namely Dayong Mendoza, Boycie Zamar, and Biboy Rvanes.

The other half – Peter Martin, Ato Agustin, and Jorge Gallent will be on hand to assist head coach Leo Austria when the Beermen start their drive for 6 straight Philippine Cup titles.

PBA and Gilas legend Jimmy Alapag, also one of the team’s deputies, already moved back to the US together with his family.

Teams are only allowed to bring in 25 people inside the bubble, 15 of which are players. Physical therapists, trainers, and utility staff make up the rest.

“Yung coaching staff namin puwede nang isang lineup e, so hindi puwedeng isama lahat,” said Austria.

“Kulang na kulang talaga, but we understand the situation. We don’t want to have so many people sa bawat team, to limit the number of persons for the safety of everyone,” he added.

The ones who were left behind, however, still have duties to tend to.

“Nakausap ko yung mga coaches who are left behind and actually sila ang nagbukas. Every game nakatutok sila and whatever comments or inputs na ibibigay nila ay ipapadala nila sa amin,” said Austria.

“I wish kasama namin sila kasi in the past five years, intact yung coaching staff namin. Pero meron siyempreng certain number of persons lang sa bubble, so pinag-kasya lang namin yun,” added the 8-time PBA champion mentor.
