With their real groove yet to be found San Miguel Beer and NorthPort failed to get the good start they wanted in the PBA Governors Cup.

Getting fully untracked and start building up momentum is the common goal of the Beermen and Batang Pier Sunday when they square off in the PBA Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

No less than SMB coach Leo Austria admitted the match is a very important one for his team, which is still trying to find full cohesion after a couple of pre-conference moves that saw the departure of team stalwarts Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot. Chris Ross also still has to join the team after attending the funeral of his father in the US.

“Hindi naman ganoon kadaling mag-adjust, siyempre meron pang kapaan,” said Austria after his Beermen fell to Alaska 94-99 last Friday, a defeat that came on the heels of a 102-114 loss to NLEX just two days prior.

“Hindi rin nakakatulong na sunod-sunod ang laro namin, pero I’m still optimistic na despite that makukuha rin cohesion na hinahanap namin,” added Austria.

NorthPort is in as sorry a state as SMB, losing to Alaska 85-87 on opening day and an equally heartbreaking 115-120 overtime decision to NLEX also last Friday.

Coach Pido Jarencio has previously claimed the Alaska game was the first time his Batang Pier played as a full unit and did show some improvements in the NLEX match, even leading by six points inside the last three minutes of regulation and forging a 111-all tie in the extension.
