San Miguel Beer held off Brgy. Ginebra’s fast-paced game to prevail, 81-75, last night in Game 1 of their PBA All-Filipino Cup Finals series at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen never let the Gin Kings get into their groove, expertly reigning in Ginebra’s potentially devastating run-and-gun game to gain a headstart in their best-of-seven affair.
Ginebra, a heavy underdog against its powerhouse sister team, expectedly launched mini rallies but they all fizzled out as soon as Danny Seigle found his range late in the game.
Ron Jacobs, consultant to both Ginebra and San Miguel, broke his promise to go into exile during the series and instead took on the role of a TV analyst along with Noli Eala and “Dr. J” Andy Jao.
With still five minutes left and San Miguel on top (72-58), Jacobs sounded an alarm for Ginebra and predicted how the Gin Kings would wilt under the Beermen’s crunchtime assault.
“Ginebra should win Game 2 otherwise it would be very difficult to win against San Miguel four games out of five,” said Jacobs.
